How to Access Hope Street Services
Where are we:
Hope Street owns 3 apartment buildings all located on the corners of 26th Street and Capitol Drive in Milwaukee. Hope Street can house and minister to up to 88 adult men and women who want to get off and stay off of alcohol and other drugs. We are a 501c 3 Wisconsin Nonprofit Corporation governed by a Board of Directors who voluntarily serve the ministry in many ways.
Criteria for Membership:
- A long history of alcohol and/or drug abuse and a sincere desire to change.
- Candidates must display a teachable attitude and be open to a faith based Christian approach to change their lives.
- Must be willing to comply with the structure, rules and program at Hope Street and submit to random urine drug tests.
- We do not accept children in our facilities, registered first degree sexual offenders and individuals with serious anger issues and who pose a threat of violence. No violent ex-offenders except under special circumstances when they can verify that behavior is no longer a part of their life.
- Must be employed or readily employable and able to pay their monthly membership fees. We do accept some individuals who are on disability income and/or SSI if they can meet the program expectations.
- Must have motivation for change.
- Must be able to handle stairs, keep their shared apartment in order and participate in various assigned jobs that help keep Hope Street clean and orderly.
- We do not accept married couples and do not permit guests overnight except children occasionally with prior approval for a weekend night.
Admitting/Screening Process:
- We accept referrals from all over the community. The first step is to schedule a free assessment. Please call our office at 414-445-5404 to schedule this assessment Monday through Friday between 8:30AM and 4:30PM or other times by appointment.
- We conduct an assessment to determine if the individual meets the criteria for coming to Hope Street, receptibility to our Christian based approach and willingness to comply with our program expectations.
- We also conduct a criminal background check and we look for someone to supply us with a reference as to the individual’s character and motivation whenever possible.
- We determine how and when the candidate will be able to pay their $150.00 Admitting Fee and $350 Monthly Membership Fees to live at Hope Street which includes utilities and food from our food pantry if needed.
- Based on the above information we make an immediate determination in almost all cases as to whether or not we will take and individual. We will report back to the referral source our decision within 48 hours if at all possible.
What is it like at Hope Street:
Apartments are shared with another member with each having private sleeping areas and sharing the dining room, bathroom and kitchen. Members do their own cooking and apartments are furnished. We strongly discourage members bringing in their own furniture and too much “stuff”. Our buildings are beautiful and completely remodeled and we want members to feel proud to call Hope Street Ministries their temporary Home. We have Security systems, motion detecting cameras around all buildings and we conduct weekly room inspections to assure the place in kept in a clean and orderly manner. There is a “family” atmosphere around the place and members help one another on their journey of faith in rebuilding their lives.
