If I Were God...
If I were God…
and I had to send my son into the world – he would be a huge, strong, superhero type guy. 6ft 2’, well built, riding on a gold chariot out of the sky and landing on the door step of the most powerful king at that time and aptly taking his place.
If I were God…
I am often so glad that I am not. Because that’s not how He did it at all, is it?
Instead God sends his precious son to be born of a teenage girl, in a manger, as the most vulnerable form of humanity – a baby! A helpless baby. The Almighty God, gave up all he had and became Immanuel – God with us. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
Phil 2:6-8
(Christ Jesus) Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
And thus a different Kingdom was established – not one that we were expecting but one that is indeed far more powerful. One that isn’t threatened to be vulnerable. Led by a King who knows how to put aside perfection and walk into broken. One who sees us in our frailty and loves us intensely there because he has walked in our shoes. He gets this fading tent that is our bodies because he wore one. He gets temptation because he too was tempted as it says in Hebrews, and yet was without sin. And by his death – he freed us from him who holds the power of death. We were freed from fear and bondage. Those are not our portion any more. So let us celebrate this baby, Immanuel, our King and let us live out his unexpected Kingdom and expand it where we can.
Merry Christmas!
