A Debrief With God
Recently, an adult member has started coming into my office each week for what he calls a “life debrief.” He shares what’s been happening in his life, asks for advice, and sometimes just word-vomits whatever has been taking up space in his mind.
It has quickly become one of my favorite times of the week. I get a glimpse into his life in a way I didn’t have before. It’s an honor, really, to be invited in—to know him, to listen to him, and to be known by him in return.
It also reminded me of my relationship with our Father.
I tend to come to God for my own “life debriefs,” especially in seasons of struggle, hardship, and confusion. But I’ve realized how often I forget to bring Him my celebrations, breakthroughs, and moments of joy, too. And here at Hope Street, those moments of joy and flourishing actually happen more often than I sometimes realize.
Psalm 62:8 says, “Trust in him at all times; pour out your hearts before him. God is our refuge.” We’re invited to pour out our hearts to Him in every season—to bring Him our worries and our victories, our questions and our gratitude, our disappointments and our celebrations. God wants the whole debrief.
Dear God,
First, I want to come to You with appreciation. Thank You for all the good You are doing within Homes and Shechem. Thank You for the laughter that fills both spaces, for goals—big and small—being accomplished, and for the safety and peace You provide within our buildings.
Thank You for being our refuge and for giving us a sense of protection when the world around us feels uncertain. Help each of us to trust You at all times and to come to You daily with our own “life debriefs.” Teach us to bring You not only our struggles and confusion, but also our celebrations, breakthroughs, gratitude, and joy.
Thank You for allowing us to know You and to be known by You. May we continue to recognize the ways You are protecting, cultivating hope, and building community within Hope Street.
Amen,
Lauren
