At Hope Street, We Meet People Where They Are

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless.” — Matthew 9:36 (NIV)

Recently our CEO, Ashley, told me, “At Hope Street, we meet people where they are.” That statement stuck with me because it sounds simple, but actually living it out can be challenging.

Meeting people where they are means letting go of where we think they should be. It means recognizing that everyone’s journey, capacity, struggles, and growth look different. Sometimes we are so focused on helping someone get to the next place that we forget to simply be present with them in the place they’re in right now.

Jesus modeled this constantly. He met people in their fear, brokenness, confusion, sin, and doubt. He didn’t wait for them to have everything together before showing them compassion. He stayed with them in the midst of their mess.

At Hope Street, meeting people where they are doesn’t mean leaving them there. It means saying, “I see you right here, and I’m willing to walk with you from here.”

The most hopeful thing we can do for someone is simply meet them in their present moment and remind them that they are worth walking alongside. Because we don’t have the answers; God does.

Jesus, help us see people the way You see them. Give us patience when someone’s journey looks different from what we expected. Teach us to listen before trying to fix, understand before judging, and love without conditions. Help Hope Street remain a place where people know they can come exactly as they are and still be seen, valued, and loved.
