He Misses Nothing

I see one of our kids with a sour face walking back into the building.

Me: “You OK, bud?”

Kid: “Naw, I have to walk all the way back upstairs to get my baby brother’s cup, and my ankle is sprung”

I smiled, first at the expression, and then with an understanding of the nuisance.

When he came back down, before heading out, I said ManMan, you’re a good big brother, you know that? He set the cup down, gave me a hug and smiled, as he said, “Thanks”.

One of the things I love most about Hope Street is we have the opportunity to witness and be a part of simple everyday moments. And yet, these moments, instrumental to an individual's growth and development. I was reminded of how a simple word of encouragement goes a long way, and ManMan realized his service to his brother far outweighs the inconvenience.

Father, you miss nothing. Help us not to miss what matters most. Give us the grace to slow down when needed, and help us to be the encouraging word someone needs to hear. In the same breath, be our strength to serve others, even and especially when it’s inconvenient. Thank you for creating a safe space where we can learn all these things and more. Continue to soften our hearts and transform our minds as we become better reflections of you. May your love do what it does best.

Amen,

Ash
