Living in Community

“What’s going on around here?” Those words spoken by a Homes member brought tears to my eyes earlier this week. He was referencing the fact that several members recently chose to live outside of the framework they’d committed to, and had to leave as a result of those choices. It’s been a heavy last couple of weeks here at Homes and I initially heard his question as one spoken in fear…or maybe even judgment.

And yet, as he talked further, it quickly became evident that his question was actually deeply rooted in genuine care for this community. This place that he calls home. And all of us whom he calls family. No judgement towards those who had to leave, no judgment toward staff for our part in upholding the values of building community, cultivating hope and protecting…and no hint of fear of what might happen next. 

My initial feelings of defensiveness (what really was my own fear) fell apart completely as this Homes member bowed his head and brought this whole community before Father God. He prayed for peace over every person. And in that moment, I was reminded yet again that it’s safe here within the Greenhouse. Tears of fear turned into tears of thankfulness.

Dear Jesus,

Thank You for this member who took the time to pray this week. I’m continually humbled by the moments of invitation that happen here. Not always into things that “feel good”…but into the deep truth that You will make all things new. 

I confess my moments of striving to hold things together. I confess my own fears of what the next season may hold. You, Father God are the beginning and the end. Nothing surprises You…You know what each day holds. 

Would You help me…all of us…to trust You more? Please continue to make Your presence known with those who have left this community. Please remind them of the thing that is most true: we are all Beloved by You.
