Nothing is more ridiculous to me than a teenage girl with an eye roll. Except maybe a whole neck roll. I have noticed one of our teenage member’s actions, and have been worried about her attitude. She has a short fuse and I have seen many people catch the end of it. Frankly, I don’t even want to engage with the sass. I have grace but I didn’t know how far my patience would extend.

Today, I found her sitting with two of our sweetest and most dependable members. I figured now, if any, was a time I could sit with them and see if I could get through. I sat down and immediately got the “stank face” (a face named by 8 year Blessin). She told me I was in her seat but she would let it slide because I’m staff. I asked her if she could let it slide for other people too and she remarked that she wouldn’t as she doesn’t like other people.

I remained seated and began easy conversation with our two dependable members as our eye roller chased around boys and stuck up middle fingers. When she came back, she sat for a second and I asked her what her goals were for the school year.

She said she didn’t want to be a part of the drama and that she wanted a good GPA. I was happy for even a moment of pause. A recognition that all the drama in the past wasn’t a script for the future.

The school year has started at many of our local schools. Our back to school event last week was one of the biggest blessings and celebrations. Kids walked away fully prepared with their book bags and school supplies. Now, I just ask that you prepare their hearts.

I hope this is a year of growth for our kids. I hope kids heal and soften. I hope kids gain a sense of belonging. I hope kids are open to learning. I hope stank faces turn into smiles.

I pray for patience and grace for our staff and for our kids. I pray for a successful school year- one of joy, safety, and growth!

Amen,

Kendall, Shechem Director
