Space Between

When asked about my profession, I often tell folks that I live at the empty heart of

paradox. While I lifted the lyrical portion of that sentence from everyone’s favorite 13 th -

century poet, Rumi, it holds true for most of what I do: help others become comfortable

with making decisions based on ambiguous and contradicting information. But, really,

that’s what all of us experience every day, isn’t it? We live in a world where those we

love sometimes betray us, those we help sometimes disappoint us, and those from

whom we seek guidance sometimes underwhelm us. Our faith is often tested at these

inflection points: faith in others, for sure, but our faith in God as well. How do we thrive

in world full of contradiction? If we’re built for Heaven, how do we endure the ambiguity

between right and wrong here on Earth?

Dear God,

We thank you for making us and making us different. Please help us to be less troubled

by the contradictions of this world. Please help us become more comfortable with the

ambiguity of promise by focusing on Your process, instead of the disappointment of our

results. Ultimately, please help us embrace living at the empty heart of paradox, and

learn to love each other in the space between.

Amen.
